Jesse Ventura is an ass.
First off I am a huge fan of Opie and Anthony, who you can catch on Sirius XM. I’ll take a second to say they’re the best cringe or “shock” jocks on radio today (and don’t get me started on Howard Stern, he may have paved the way but he’s way past his prime and honestly talks about OandA so much I think he’s intimidated). Anyway, the shows great as all three hosts (Opie Hughes, Anthony Cumia, and Jim Norton) have razor sharp wit’s, Jim’s the funniest (and should be as he’s a stand up comedian) with Anthony coming in at a close second, Opie’s great at playing the asshole, or maybe he’s not playing, regardless he perfectly rounds out the trio.
I’ve been listening to them for a few years now and they’ve given me lots of laughs, but one of the things that I really like about OandA (especially when compared to Stern) is the amount of political commentary as well as world and national news and pop culture they discuss. Yes a lot of their humor is base, but they are three smart guys. I really like the dynamic of Anthony the ultra conservative vs. Jim and Opie who tend to be more left of Anthony. You get a lot of good discusion with humor thrown in.
This post is dedicated to the Dec. 2nd episode (which you can pick up on Audible.com if your interested) during the last couple hours they had Jesse Ventura (former Navy Frogman NOT a SEAL, wrestler, and Governor of Minasota. If you don’t know much about Ventura, he is a whack job when it comes to conspiracy theories. He’s promoting his new show on TruTV (I think or TrueTV, used to be Court TV) that focuses on conspiracies that he’s investigated that have occured within the last decade (and are supposedly still ongoing). First I’ll start with his ranting about HAARP which is a radio/atmospheric research center in Alaska it uses high powered radio signals bounced off the ionosphere for testing low frequency radio signals (communication with submarines is what it’s for). Jess claims that HAARP is either for creating a hole in the ionosphere, which in turn would have an effect on weather. This is ludicrous but wait there’s more. He also claims that the radio is tuned to the frequency that the human brain “runs on” thereby allowing possible mind control and/or control of human emotion. By far his most rediculous claim is that the radio array caused the Tsunami in Indonesia supported by claims of Indonesians seeing “Northern Lighs” which appearantly go along with the use of the device. It’s amazing that he can ignore the fact that they scientifically proved that a large sediment shelf dropped several hundred feet off the Indonesian coast causing the tsunami. But I suppose doing research shouldn’t be pre-requisite of making a TV show. It’s better to spread unfounded facts to support an unrealistic conclusion for ratings because the American public loves swill and fearmongering. Anyway, enough of this HAARP topic let’s move on to some other great stuff.
The JFK assasination was brought up and even though it isn’t diacussed in any of his shows, he mentioned that as governor he was able to speak with Fidel Castro and they discussed the assasination. He is still stuck in the “magic bullet”, “second shooter/four shots”, “Oswald couldn’t shoot that well” defenses of the “conspiracy”. Now, I’m a firm believer that Oswald was the only shooter. It’s been shown through very reputable scientific sources that indeed the bullet that was “magic” followed an almost straight trajectory right into Connelly’s leg. It was pristine because it is a full metal jacketed bullet that didn’t impact any bone and human soft tissue will not deform a slug of this makeup. It’s also been shown that the sounds recorded by the police mic left on reveal only three shots and an echo perfectly matching the film footage. That said, I can’t say that Oswald did this on his own or not. He may have. He may have also had help therein lying the conspiracy. It would help if the Government could release everything related to the incident which remains undone. But to say a conspiracy of more than one shooter existed is again ludicrous. Too many people would have been involved to keep it quiet for so many years regardless of what Oliver Stone and Jesse Ventura think (both Vietnam vetrans, maybe Agent Orange causes deep seated paranoia).
Lastly, during the interview it was brought up several times that the government should not be involved with Afghanistan and Iraq. Granted mistakes may have been made, mostly by the Bush administration not telling us everything and being secretive, as I would have supported overthrowing Hussein regardless of WMD’s because it was the right thing to do and we should have done it during the first gulf war. Ventura seems to have a huge problem with the use of “torture” specifically water-boarding (which I think is acceptable) and argued for any terrorist to be tried as a criminal for murder as one civillian against another. The problem is that even though the “enemy combattants” represent no one sovereign nation and in his words are not military and can’t be treated as such, we are indeed facing a para-military group or militia of trained soldiers. Regardless of whether or not they represent a nation is irrelevant. They are a military group and we should be fighting this war in a way that may seem dirty or wrong under previous standards. One example that I can think of is gurilla warfare that was in effect invented by the Americans during the revolutionary war. Previous to that one army faced another and they slaughtered each other face to face in a line. When the British tried that during the revolution we fought behind trees and used shielding to our advantage. If the British would have done the same we may well be a British colony to this day but they failed to stoop to our level and fight “dirty”. Jesse’s argument for not adapting battle tacticts and punishments for terrorists is no different. War is dirty my friends and if we choose to remain on the high groiund and refuse to do what is necessary, we may as well give up now. Of course we are fighting a military, a non-national one but a military nonetheless. I think to win we need a two pronged approach, fight their foot soldiers with ours and let the CIA take covert action where needed using Amy resource possible. To say that water-boarding is torture and we’re above it while they behead prisoners is insane. Many of his arguments were based on the premise that in a country of laws the rule of law should always apply even when it’s inconvenient. Well if that’s the case then let the interrogations take place in Afghanistan where American law doesn’t apply. Jesse earlier in the show was asked about why he did in Vietnam and the service of Navy Seals. He declined to comment except for stating that the last publisized action by a Seal team was the Christmas rescue of a pirate held ship where the three pirates were executed, Jim asked if the pirates were read their Miranda rights Ventura’s reply was “No they weren’t in the US”. I leave you with this thought, if it was fine for us to execute pirates, a small group that took over a boat, why can we not fight a terrorist para-military organization, that is known to have killed nearly 4000 Americans in all their attacks, using any means necessary? Jesse wants it one way and the other but you can’t have both my friend.
He also left the show sulking because Jim called him out and his only response would have been to knock Jimmy, his own animal instinct taking over instead of logically arguing his points. It’s at that point you have to realize you need to change your thinking because your thinking is incorrect.
Bye Jesse Ventura. Thank God your not a Senator. Go back to the other idiots and wrestle.
